Job Opportunity: Director of Development

 

The Museum of Performance & Design seeks a full-time Director of Development.

Reporting to the Director of the Museum, the Director of Development leads and executes the fundraising activities for the Museum and has primary responsibility for achieving contributed revenue goals as established by the Board of Directors. Working closely with the Director and the Board, the Director of Development monitors progress against annual fundraising goals, participates in strategic planning, and serves as a member of the Museum’s Senior Staff.

The Museum of Performance & Design is the first international arts institution devoted to the celebration of the performing arts and theatrical design. The mission of the Museum is to educate people of all ages about the impact and value of the performing arts in their lives through exhibitions, programming, and research. In addition the Museum collects, preserves, and makes accessible performance and design materials that reflect our diverse culture. The Museum of Performance & Design has an exhibition venue, education program, research facility, and archive founded on a 3.5 million-item collection of performing arts materials.

The foundation of the Museum is its performing arts collection which is internationally recognized and the largest in the Western U.S. Established in 1947, the collection contains items dating from the Gold Rush era. It is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with an annual budget of $1 million and it is currently located in the Veteran’s Building of the War Memorial Performing Arts Center in the heart of San Francisco cultural district.

A capital campaign is being organized to raise $35 million for a new state-of-the-art facility in San Francisco to house the Museum and its galleries, all of the current 3.5 million item holdings of the Performing Arts Library, an education center, and a 299-seat theater for community use. The target date for the new facility is set for 2012.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Designs and implements all aspects of the Museum’s Annual Fund Drive (approximately $1 million), including developing membership recruitment and retention strategies, major gift fundraising, and creating donor cultivation and stewardship opportunities. Undertakes special fundraising efforts as required, such as capital campaigns and planned giving, and assists in developing institutional public relations and marketing activities.

2. Works closely with the Board President and the Board of Trustees to determine institutional fundraising goals and strategies. Coordinates and manages the Board Development Committee.

3. Researches and identifies institutional funding sources. Develops relationships with Foundation and Corporate executives and program officers; develops and drafts grant proposals and reports, meeting all deadlines and satisfying all grant reporting requirements.

4. Manages institutional donor database and supervises a Development Associate who handles gift processing, data entry and coding, mailings, and membership services and benefits.

5. Plans and coordinates special events, public relations, and institutional marketing activities that support the institution’s funding programs.

6. Locates and cultivates new sources of funding support.

7. Coordinates special events and development activities, working closely with volunteers.

8. Works with the Museum Director on institutional issues and planning.

9. Represents the Museum at local, regional, and national meetings and functions as required.

10. Participates in the strategic planning and coordination of the Capital Campaign and collaborates with a Capital Campaign Manager (consultant).

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum of three years in progressively responsible Development positions with non-profit organizations or the equivalent.

2. Bachelor’s degree in arts and culture or in a related field, or equivalent work experience in the nonprofit sector;

3. Development experience and familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area funding community; Capital Campaign experience is a plus;

4. Strong written and verbal communications skills; attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects;

5. Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office and Internet-based applications as well as experience with donor database management software;

6. Demonstrated ability to work sensitively with diverse people and communities;

7. Must possess discretion and work well with highly placed community, business, and philanthropic leaders.

8. Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers to manage projects, set priorities, and work cooperatively to meet internal and external requests;

9. Demonstrated interest, appreciation and understanding of museums, libraries and the performing arts.

COMPENSATION: $55,000 with medical benefits.
