A student of well-known composer and teacher Ruth Crawford Seeger, Vivian Fine was a composer with a large body of important experimental music in a variety of genres, including solo piano, chamber works for instruments and voice, symphony and opera. As the only female member of Aaron Copland’s Young Composers Group, Fine’s compositions were frequently commissioned by several early classical modern dance choreographers, including Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, José Limón, and Doris Humphrey, among others. Fine was honored by the San Francisco Symphony with a retrospective of her works in 1983. Legacy nterviewer is Dennis Mullen
